Choral Favorites
Voce celebrates the history of choral music through familiar works. When set in juxtaposition with newer music, we can better appreciate the sounds of the past and present.
“Come to the Woods”
Enjoy this spring concert highlight entitled, "Come to the Woods" by composer Jake Runestad. This piece sets the words of naturalist John Muir describing his childlike wonder at the sight of an approaching thunderstorm.
“Dark Night of the Soul”
Ola Gjeilo’s “Dark Night of the Soul” sets the introspective words of St. John of the Cross’ sixteenth-century poem. The choir begins with an expansive tapestry of contemporary harmonies while the piano guides the full ensemble through fourteen minutes of transcendental beauty.
“Christus”
This clip features two movements from Felix Mendelssohn's unfinished oratorio, Christus.
“Morgenwanderung”
Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847) was the sister of Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) and is considered one of the most prolific female composers of the 19th century. This piece entitled, "Morgenwanderung" [Morning Hike] encapsulates the beautiful flowers and curious creatures of a forest emerging at daybreak.
